Available for workshops, guest lectures, portfolio review, and private instruction, Lars draws from a diverse background in photojournalism and fine art photography.

Alongside his professional and personal work, Lars Howlett has taught photography at the high school, college, and adult levels for five years. He is an adjunct professor in digital and documentary photography at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco since 2008 .

For three years prior he was a teacher of black and white film photography at Sacred Heart Preparatory in Atherton, California, where he was awarded a curriculum development grant. This led to the creation of an advanced photography course that culminated in a collaborative project on immigration and a weeklong immersion for teenagers at a migrant refuge in Tijuana. The project was featured in the San Jose Mercury News as well as Sojourners Magazine and was presented in two well-received exhibitions.

In 2008 Lars was a mentor for a six-month arts program in the Mission District of San Francisco that provided cameras and guidance to immigrant youth, helping them to document and share their stories.

Lars has also assisted professional photographers including Nubar Alexanian and Michael Powers with additional experience working at the Aurora Photos editorial and stock agency, the imaging departments of the Newseum and Natural History Museum, and a professional photo lab.

Lars is a graduate of Northwestern University with a B.S. in Communications and a concentration in Fine Art. He went on to study at the Corcoran School of Art, the Maine College of Art, and the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies.
